PLM Timeline

Filed under: General — Will @ 10:51 am

The idea for product lifecycle management (PLM) is thought to have started in 1985 during the development of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. American Motors Corportation – later purchased by Chrysler – wanted to speed up product development, improve communication and use a central repository to access important product docs. The result was the first PLM system.Today, PLM has become a key component of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, the broadest term used to describe enterprise software applications in manufacturing and other industries. For a quick way to understand the context of current enterprise software events, check out the Software Advice manufacturing & ERP software timeline. The timeline includes 17 key events that have shaped the ERP software industry over the last 50 years. However, it’s not complete…

They want to grow the timeline to over 35+ events and dates. To do so, they have asked for industry experts to contribute their suggestions. Sort of like a “wiki-timeline.” If you have any ideas, email Houston (houston@softwareadvice.com).

just-style to launch new buyers’ guide to PLM

Filed under: General, News, Resources — Tags: Dassault, Just-Style — admin @ 10:39 am

A business information portal dedicated to PLM (product lifecycle management) software for the fashion and textile industry is being launched by just-style in the New Year.

The just-style PLM hub will provide executives and decision makers in the apparel industry with information including an introduction to PLM, news and announcements, vendor white papers and interviews.

The free-to-view service, which will go live during the first week of January, will also post company profiles and a complete vendor directory.

PLM software enables fashion firms to manage rapid response times, constant order changes and short product lifecycles across complex global supply chains.

Leading apparel and footwear companies know that managing their product supply chain with the right PLM solution is particularly crucial given the current global economic slowdown.

Indeed, the flow of new fashions to entice consumers into stores, boosting full price sales, and keeping smaller inventories gives them a competitive edge at a time when they need it most.

Dassault Systèmes is the lead PLM vendor supporting the hub.

John Squire, vice president of marketing for Dassault Systèmes’ Enovia brand said: “just-style’s hub is an ideal platform for Dassault to drive global brand awareness and expand our leadership position in the market for retail, footwear and apparel PLM solutions.”

Arena Solutions announce 38% leap in revenues

Arena Solutions, a leading provider of on-demand product lifecycle management (PLM) software, today announced a 38 percent quarter-over-quarter gain and 103% year-over-year gain in revenues for its second quarter.

The company has taken advantage of the economic downturn that has seen manufacturers turn to PLM to accelerate product development, reduce time to market and increase profitability.

“As a contract manufacturer we get bills of materials (BOMs) in every conceivable form. Arena PLM gives us a central repository, a common format, and revision control that is nearly impossible to maintain otherwise,” said Rod Mullins, process engineering manager at Idaho-based Western Electronics. “The ability to lock all data once a product is released to production is key, and the automated routing of BOM changes reduces the time to implement a change and minimizes the potential of a misbuild. This enhanced control and improved communication are especially important during periods of economic slowdown when our customers are even more concerned with avoiding waste, redundancy, and costly errors.”

Rumours of further consolidation in the PLM market

Filed under: General — Tags: Financial Times, Goldman Sachs, Oracle, PTC, Siemens PLM Software — admin @ 4:37 pm

The PLM sector has seen plenty of significant aquistions in the last couple of years.  Firstly there was the takeover of the heavyweight PLM provider UGS by Siemens, which subsequently became Siemens PLM, then came the takeover of Agile by Oracle and Co-Create by PTC.   These purchases illustrate the strength and perceived potential of the PLM industry as a whole, but also the need by providers to offer a complete end-to-end solution and to diversify into the market for smaller companies – an area that is seeing significant growth.

Not for the first time, PTC has now become subject to takeover speculation.  Earlier this year there were rumours that PTC could be an aquisition target, the most likely suitor being touted as SAP – this, and positive sales figures, saw their share price leap from $13.68 in mid-March to more than $21 by mid-August.   This month, the Financial Times announced that PTC has engaged the services of Goldman Sachs to look for potential buyers with a price tag of around $2billion.   PTC are yet to comment on this speculation, and at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference on September 9th, Kristian Talvitie, PTC’s vice-president of investor relations said “With respect to the article, things get printed on rumors all the time. I can’t comment on that. But as a public company, our shares are always for sale on the Exchange.”

Whether the rumour is true or not, it seems reasonable to assume that a takeover approach might well win board approval in light of the Boston Business Journal reporting a bonus increase for senior management should an acquistion be successful.
